Research FAQs
1. Who and what is my Research Coordinator?
Your research coordinator is your main point of contact for sponsored projects and will communicate with ORA on your behalf. The Department of Geographical Sciences (DoGS) has three Research Coordinators to work with PI's, ORA and sponsors on cradle-to-grave grant administration.
2. What is ORA?
The Office of Research Administration (ORA) is the designated pre-award and post-award administration office for the University of Maryland. ORA facilitates the submission of all sponsored project proposals on behalf of the University; negotiates and executes agreements; provides sponsored projects education and communication; and assists faculty, staff, and students in managing projects, which are awarded to the University. You should work with your DoGS Research Coordinator to communicate with ORA about grant and research activity including proposal submissions, rebudgets, sponsor approval, no-cost-extensions and non-disclosure agreements.
3. I plan to submit a proposal for funding. What should I do?
Speak to your Research Coordinator early in the process to establish a timeline and identify steps for your proposal. Early notice, proper planning and open communication will avoid last minute problems and submission delays. For best results, follow this proposal timeline. Please remember to use the most recent templates for your budgets and justification.
