Jayne Brown, MS GIS '19
MS Program Alumni Spotlight Spring 2025-Jayne Brown
As our Alumni Spotlight for Spring 2025, the Master of Science and Graduate Certificate Programs at the Department of Geographical Sciences are proud to highlight Jayne Brown (formerly Jayne Deichmeister), a 2019 graduate of the MS GIS program!
Serving as the associate director of Inspection and Enforcement at the Department of Energy and Environment, Jayne is making significant strides in her career. We caught up with her to hear about her recent projects, career journey, and advice for current and prospective students.
What is a recent project that you have worked on that you have drawn on skills from the MS
program?
Several of our inspection programs use ArcGIS for daily data collection and management. We are currently working on a database development project to integrate ArcGIS with our complaint databases (in Salesforce) and enforcement databases (in Quickbase). As a program manager and SME working with IT contractors, it is REALLY helpful to have technical knowledge of data management and GIS tools/architecture, even though I am not the one actually manipulating databases.
How have the skills you have learned in the MS program helped you progress in your career?
Gaining GIS skills as an inspector allowed me to take on data projects and make lasting improvements in our workflows. These experiences then positioned me to be highly competitive for career advancement. I now manage the teams I used to work for!
What drew you to the MS GIS program at Maryland?
First, the curriculum was impressive and wide ranging, and I liked the availability of classes focused on imagery and remote sensing. Participation with ESRI innovation programs made me feel confident in the material. Second, the hybrid nature and evening class schedule allowed me to connect with the school, professors, and students while also allowing flexibility for busy schedules.
What advice can you give current and prospective students about the MS program?
Throw yourself into your assignments! School is a grind and it’s easy to get into a “get this done” kinda mode, but it’s also a unique opportunity to be an environment that’s about you and your interests. Pick topics for assignments that are either personally meaningful to you, or that have a direct impact on your job. Tell your supervisor what you are doing, and ask for input!
What recommendations would you make to current students for career and academic success after graduation?
If you find yourself in a job where your GIS skills aren’t at the forefront, make an effort to find ways to incorporate it! Keep your skills relevant in an ever-changing environment because it will come back and help you.
What are some of your hobbies/interests?
Introducing my toddler to things I actually like! Kayaking, climbing, hiking, moonbounces.
