Tatiana Loboda Reappointed Chair of Geographical Sciences
Review cites strong leadership and steady direction, extending her term through the 2030–31 academic year.
The University of Maryland has reappointed Professor Tatiana Loboda as chair of the Department of Geographical Sciences, extending her leadership for another five-year term after a review earlier this semester.
The review, conducted in accordance with university policy, included representatives from across the department. The committee found that Loboda has been an effective chair, citing her sound decision-making and steady leadership during an exceptionally challenging time.
"Professor Loboda has proven to be an extraordinary steward of the Department of Geographical Sciences, which I am very proud to say continues to be the academic home of some of the world's most renowned experts in remote sensing and climate science," BSOS Dean Susan Rivera said. "I am so grateful for Tatiana's steadfast commitment—not just to her department, but to our entire BSOS community."
Loboda will continue to lead the department as it advances its research, teaching and service mission.
Her research spans wildland fire, climate change, biodiversity and public health, with a focus on how environmental and human systems interact. She uses satellite data and remote sensing to study issues ranging from wildfire impacts in Arctic and boreal ecosystems to forecasting malaria outbreaks in Southeast Asia. A principal investigator on multiple NASA-funded projects, she also leads interdisciplinary efforts that integrate environmental science, health modeling and artificial intelligence to improve disease prediction and inform policy.
