Geographical Sciences Study Abroad to Cuba in 2017
The door to explore the exceptional island nation of Cuba is now open and the Geographical Sciences Department is offering one of the University of Maryland's first flagship programs to the island. Led by Lecturers Dustin Picard and Joe Trocino, both experts in Caribbean geography, the class will be examining first-hand the physical and cultural geographies of Cuba. The program is intense: It will be looking at the impact of early Spanish settlement, the American era, the significant Communist experiment and Cuba's vast African influence on its culture. On the physical geography side, the class has the advantage of exploring the remarkable Cuba reef system under the guidance of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's certified Master Diver, LTJG Dustin Picard. The class will take place in June, 2017 and is open, with qualifications, to all majors. This is a 3-credit, faculty accompanied, Study Abroad Program, GEOG 328C: The Physical and Cultural Geographies of Cuba.
