Shuai, Guanyuan
Bio
Guanyuan Shuai is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Department of Geographical Sciences at University of Maryland since September 2022. Guanyuan Shuai is working under the supervision of Dr. Alyssa Whitcraft and Dr. Ritvik Sahajpal, providing research support for NASA Harvest projects, particularly in support of the Harvest Sustainable and Regenerative Agriculture (SARA) Initiative.
Guanyuan Shuai completed his PhD in Geological Sciences at Michigan State University in summer 2022. The overarching goal of his PhD research is to develop and enable solutions to improve the environmental and economic returns of U.S. agricultural systems given the knowledge of spatial and temporal variability of maize and soybean yields related to landscape characteristics and management. His studies are broadly related to using Earth observation data and crop simulation models to understand the impacts of different management practices on crop production, soil health, and other environmental domains. He specializes in image analysis techniques using machine learning, deep learning algorithms, and crop modeling techniques. His research has been funded by the Harvest SARA Initiative, and he has published scientific papers in remote sensing and agronomy journals.
Degrees
Geological Sciences, Michigan State University - Ph.D
Geographical information system, Beijing Normal University - MS
Areas of Interest
- Simulating soil organic carbon and greenhouse gas emissions at various scales using remote sensing techniques and crop simulation models
- Mapping conservation agriculture practices and assessing their impacts on sustainable crop production, resilience, and environmental outcomes. This includes evaluations of yield stability at field-scale under different management practices
- Understanding dynamic spatial-temporal variability in crop conditions at subfield scales
