Weekly Seminar: Examining Boreal Forest Structure, Dr. Paul Montesano

Join us for our weekly seminar this Thursday, October 13th from 3:45-5pm in River Road RM 325 or via Zoom! Dr. Paul Montesano of NASA GSFC will be presenting "Examining boreal forest structure: Synthesizing remote sensing observations to capture current structure, quantify recent dynamics, & support predictions of change."

Abstract: The estimation of boreal forest structure is a key step towards capturing forest patterns and predicting processes in the high northern latitudes experiencing relatively fast rates of warming and change. This talk goes through some recent remote sensing work to capture forest structure and its patterns across broad geographic domains. Then, I highlight some current work to synthesize these structure estimates to update information on forest productivity for forest growth models.

Bio: Paul is a research geoscientist who focuses on the biogeography of boreal forest structure, addressing questions on the extent, pattern, and dynamics of the current and future of high northern latitude forests. To do this, he integrates spaceborne and airborne remote sensing with field observations through collaborations with other geographers, ecologists, and physical modelers. He has worked for university research labs, NASA Goddard's Biospheric Sciences lab, and currently works with the NASA Goddard's Data Science group.
