Thursday, Oct. 26: GEOG Seminar 1: Ryan Pavlick, "Global Foliar Trait Mapping"

Join us for our weekly seminar on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 3:45-5 p.m. on Zoom! Dr. Ryan Pavlick, a research technologist at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), will present on the global mapping of foliar traits and trait diversity with imaging spectroscopy as well as go over his experience of working at JPL.

Dr. Pavlick's projects often focus on using remote sensing, especially imaging spectroscopy, to understand the patterns and processes of Earth’s biodiversity and its interactions with the broader Earth system. He has contributed to developing satellite missions including NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory 3 (OCO-3) instrument on the International Space Station and the NASA Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) mission planned to launch in the late 2020s. He has planned and executed field campaigns, generally involving airborne imaging spectrometers, around the world including in California, Iowa, Alaska, Canada, India, Costa Rica, Iceland, and Europe.

Dr. Pavlick is an alum of the UMD Department of Geographical Sciences (B.S. '2005, M.A. '2007) and holds a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from the University of Hamburg.
