GEOG Seminar 2/10: Abigail Barenblitt- Looking at the Bigger Picture: Using NASA Earth Observations to Address Sustainable Development Goals

Join us for our weekly seminar series, this week featuring PhD student Abigail Barenblitt on "Looking at the Bigger Picture: Using NASA Earth Observations to address Sustainable Development Goals."

Abstract:

From Landsat to GEDI, NASA has been using remote sensing data to monitor land cover and water quality changes across the globe. In 2015, the United Nations established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with the overall objective of improving health, education, and poverty, all while addressing climate change and the conservation of oceans and forests. Each participating UN country aims to meet these goals, such as Clean Water and Sanitation for All, by the year 2030. To monitor these goals, NASA's Biospheric Sciences Lab has been creating tools to not only detect changes to ecosystems like mangroves, but also allow in-country partners to acquire the information they need to report on progress. Focusing on mangroves and forests as metrics for addressing SDG efforts, I will review our progress towards monitoring these goals with publicly available remote sensing data.
