GEOG Seminar 10/16: Keehoon Jung, "The Effects of Climate Change on Vulnerable Children ..."
Join us at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16 for the seminar "The Effects of Climate Change on Vulnerable Children with Dispersed Family Networks."
Keehoon Jung, doctoral student in agricultural and resource economics, will present his recent research on how climate change impacts vulnerable children living in urban slums of Nairobi through dispersed family networks.
Using panel survey data on kinship ties, he demonstrates that children are not insulated from climate shocks occurring in distant parts of Kenya where their relatives reside. His findings show that yearly fluctuations in agricultural yields in these regions significantly influence children’s weight-for-age and height-for-age outcomes.
This work highlights how climate risks extend across geographic boundaries through kin networks, with important implications for understanding hidden channels of vulnerability and designing effective policy responses.
