Creating/Editing a Dissertation Committee
After PAC is passed, create a DSAC Committee of 4 people:
- All must be members of the University of Maryland Graduate Faculty. Check the current list here.
- At least two from Geographical Sciences Faculty (tenured/tenure-track, research faculty, or lecturers).
- At least two tenured/tenure-track ("full" Graduate committee members).
- At least one from outside the Department.
After Dissertation Proposal is passed, create a DEC Committee of 5 people (4 from DSAC + Dean's Representative)
- All must be members of the University of Maryland Graduate Faculty.
- At least two from Geographical Sciences Faculty (tenured/tenure-track, research faculty, or lecturers).
- At least three tenured/tenure-track ("full" Graduate committee members).
- At least one from outside the Department.
- A Dean's Rep (tenured member of another UMD Department and a "full" Graduate committee member). If your Dean's Rep is a voting member, you will have a committee of 5. If not, you will have a committee of 6.
If a member of your committee is not on the Graduate Faculty (check the list above), your advisor needs to nominate this person to the Graduate Faculty by sending the nominees CV and a statement for nomination to the Graduate Director. Students: you can submit your nomination form before all DSAC members are voted onto the Graduate Faculty. The nominee's graduate faculty membership must be approved at the departmental level prior to your dissertation proposal defense. The nominee's graduate faculty membership must be approved at the Graduate School level prior to your dissertation defense.
