Yiqun Xie is an Assistant Professor of Geospatial Information Science at the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2020.
Dr. Xie's broad research area is on spatial data science and artificial intelligence (a.k.a. GeoAI). One size AI does not fit all. Direct applications of traditional AI techniques on spatial data and problems often fall short due to key challenges including spatial heterogeneity, limited training data, etc. Dr. Xie's work investigates novel techniques and theoretical insights to bridge these gaps in applications such as smart cities, agriculture, Earth observation, transportation, etc.
His group's research has been funded as the PI by NSF (IIS-2105133, 2126474), Google (AI for Social Good), and the University of Maryland (DRI seed grant); and as Co-I by NASA (LCLUC).
Dr. Xie is the recipient of multiple best paper awards from top computer science conferences on data mining and spatial computing*, including:
- Best Paper Award, IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM) 2021
- Best Paper Award, SSTD'19
- Best Vision Paper Award, ACM SIGSPATIAL'19. Highlighted by the Great Innovative Ideas program at the Computing Community Consortium (part of the Computing Research Association)
*In computing research, computer science conferences are considered as important as journals: Full length, highly selective (e.g., 10%-20% acceptance rate) and high impact (More info: National Academies Press).
Professional services include Technical Program Committee members for conferences including ACM SIGKDD, ACM SIGSPATIAL, AAAI, IJCAI and SDM; Co-Chair of SpatialAPI Workshop at ACM SIGSPATIAL 2021, and Session Chair at the Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Data Mining(SSTDM) Workshop in IEEE ICDM 2018; reviewers for technical journals (e.g., ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology; ACM Transactions on Data Science), and interdisciplinary journals (e.g., Remote Sensing of Environment, IJGIS).
