GEOG Developing links with the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment in China
The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) Dean, Dr. John Townshend, visited the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment (IMHE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Chengdu, China, in October, 2012, at the invitation of Dr. Wei Deng, the director of IMHE. Dr. Townshend gave the opening plenary talk at the Second International Conference on Mountain Environment and Development (ICMED) 2012.
An agreement of cooperation between the two institutions was exchanged during the signing ceremony, and a special cooperative program on remote sensing applications funded by IMHE has been started immediately. This program will last for 3 years and provide support to the researchers from UMD to work with IMHE scientists in China.
An IMHE delegation, headed by Dr. Deng visited BSOS and the Department of Geographical Sciences in April of 2012. One of its members, Professor Ainong Li, worked in the department for two years and now directs their remote sensing program. After their visit, Dr. Shunlin Liang, Dr. Chengquan Huang, Dr. Eric Vermote and other faculty from the department visited IMHE in Chengdu. Further proposals for cooperative research are currently under development.
