The International GEO-Innovation Center is excited to welcome Rizos Theodoros Chadoulis, a visiting scholar from Greece. He is a Ph.D. candidate at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki working towards his dissertation, entitled "Signal Processing & Information Analysis for Environmental Monitoring."

As a research assistant at the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), Rizos has worked on pre-symptomatic plant disease detection using hyper-spectral images of tobacco plants. His advisers are Dr. Ioannis Manakos, principal researcher at CERTH, and Prof. Constantine Kotropoulos at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

At the University of Maryland, Rizos will work with Dr. Maria Zubkova and Dr. Chris Justice on land cover and land use change in conflict regions, particularly Somalia. He will use Very High Resolution (VHR) Planet Imagery to produce ground truth data through visual interpretation. He hopes this work will lead to a paper and be part of his Ph.D. dissertation.

During his spare time, Rizos likes to engage with the local community. He looks forward to visiting urban parks and museums in the Washington D.C. area during his stay at UMD.
