Yolande is interested in large scale hydrological modeling of the Congo Basin using remote sensed data. She joined the Geographical Sciences Department in Spring 2012 and currently holds a graduate research assistantship position while pursuing a PhD Program under Professor Matthew C. Hansen. Yolande started pursuing her PhD in 2008 in Geospatial Science & Engineering at the Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence (GIScCE) at South Dakota State University under Professor Matthew C. Hansen. She came initially into the GISc Center as a visiting scientist to work on her START/PACOM (US National Science Foundation/ US Climate Change Science Program) funded project entitled :“Satellite-derived Rainfall Estimates (TRMM products) used for Hydrological Predictions of the Congo River flow”.
To pursue her PhD, Yolande was initially funded by the USGS - SWERA (Solar and Wind Energy Resource Assessment) NASA project for which she was working on small hydropower assessment using streamflow estimates. She is currently funded by the USAID’s Central Africa Regional Program for the Environment (CARPE) at UMD and by a NASA Earth System Science Fellowship Awarded to her to investigate Hydrological response to land cover and land use change in the Congo Basin (third year).
Yolande got a B.S in Agronomy from the University of Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo) where she is a Teaching Assistant. She came into the US as a Fulbright scholar to pursue a Master in Water and Wetland Resource completed at SUNY/ESF (2007). Back in the Congo and later in the US, Yolande worked with different conservation NGOs and other Environment partners such as OSFAC, WWF, and AWF. During her Master's study, she also worked in the Geographical Sciences Department of the University of Maryland as a GIS intern.
