John Davies

Master's Student

My name is John Davies and I work for the University of Maryland’s (UMD) Division of IT’s Learning Technology Group as a Technology Coordinator. I provide user support for various technologies here at the University, including the Division's Mobility Program in support of Teaching and Learning initiatives on campus. I am also graduate student at the MPSGIS program at the University of Maryland.

For many years served as technology officer for OIT/UMD assigned to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) – as a member of AGNR’s International Programs in Agriculture and Natural Resources (IPAN) team, I had the privilege of working with AGNR faculty partnering with IRIS on several agricultural ICT consulting projects, funded mostly by USAID, and other Federal organizations.

Before immigrating to the United States, I worked for several years in the field of agricultural development finance. During this time i appraised and secured seasonal and long term credit for farmers; farming associations, small farm holdings, and commercial farms. Credit was provided in the form of working capital, capital expenditure on land development activities, purchase of farm equipment for the cultivation crops on rain-fed uplands, and wetlands.

My interest in spatial analysis and GIS started when at AGNR, working on a project that was investigating the impact of market information systems (MIS) on sustainable agricultural development and the dissemination of information to subsistence farmers in Africa, using traditional (radio) and modern (ICT) tools like the internet, and mobile phones - I became intrigued with the idea of incorporating geospatial data analysis capabilities to a MIS database when building decision support systems for agricultural development..

I hold an M.Sc Agricultural Economics from Europe, M.S. Information Systems and Telecommunications for Business from Johns Hopkins University. A year’s graduate work from the School for International Training, Brattleboro, VT.
