A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by the University of Maryland, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Leicester and software company Ecometrica to foster international collaboration aimed at promoting the use of earth observation data from satellites to address deforestation and degradation. The MOU was established by Dr. Ralph Dubayah.
Dr. Dubayah is leading this new collaboration with Ecometrica to deploy their digital mapping and infrastructure platform to explore the collaborative use of Lidar technology and other satellite observation data ahead of the launch of NASA’s Lidar mission on the International Space Station – the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) Lidar. The digital infrastructure being created by Ecometrica as part of this MOU will facilitate these interactions with key universities, and enhance our ability to understand the drivers of ecosystem degradation, from climate change to human-induced land cover change. This in turn will help inform relevant policy actions geared towards slowing and even reversing this degradation.
