Jan Dempewolf is interested in the application of remote sensing and GIS algorithms to monitor agriculture, regional ecosystem change, vegetation and land cover dynamics and the interaction of these dynamics with ecosystem services and biodiversity. Before taking up his current position at the University of Maryland Jan as worked for the Tropical Ecology Assessment and Monitoring network (TEAM) at Conservation International on remote sensing and ecosystem services. Jan received his PhD at the University of Maryland at College Park, USA analyzing fire dynamics and the woodland to grassland balance in an East African savanna environment. During graduate studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA he became interested in the application of remote sensing and GIS techniques to ecological questions. He received his Diploma (Master's) degree in Geo-Ecology from the University of Bayreuth, Germany, with specialization in biogeography and agroecology. Jan has conducted field work in East African savannas, the moist forests of the Yucatán, montane rain forests in Peru, and the boreal forests of Alaska.
