Patricia Oliva

Research Associate

Patricia Oliva is a Research Associate at the Department of Geographical Sciences in the University of Maryland. She received her undergraduate and Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences and PhD in Cartography, GIS and Remote Sensing from the University of Alcala, Madrid (Spain). Dr. Oliva’s research is focused on the use of multi-spectral remote sensing data for biomass burning monitoring. She has more than 7 years of experience in burned area mapping and burned severity estimation. She is currently working on the development and validation of active fire detection algorithms for NPP-VIIRS and Landsat-8 data. She also collaborates in a project which aim to integrate active fire detections into a fire behavior model to generate an accurate prediction of the fire growth that could be used by fire managers to organize effectively their resources.
